When ten-year-old Katie O'Brien and her little brother arrive in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1882 on the "Orphan Train," they are tragically split up between two different families. Nrs. Neal picks Katie and eventually takes Katie to Denver where she has acquired a job caring for a well-known black woman, Aunt Clara Brown. The story shares many of Katie's extraordinary experiences: making a Christmas tree out of tumbleweeds, tasting her first ice cream soda, meeting her first Indian, and learning to ride a new invention--the bicycle. The best thing that happens to Katie, though, is finding a new home with people who love and care about her.
